Taste Processing: Whetting our appetites
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two G-protein-coupled receptors have been identified that are present in the apical membranes of rat and mouse taste cells and differentially distributed across the tongue and palate. They are strong candidates for being taste receptors and their discovery has provided new tools for research into gustatory processing.

Internal amino acid state modulates yeast taste neurons to support protein homeostasis in Drosophila
To optimize fitness, animals must dynamically match food choices to their current needs. For drosophilids, yeast fulfills most dietary protein and micronutrient requirements. While several yeast metabolites activate known gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) in Drosophila melanogaster, the chemosensory channels mediating yeast feeding remain unknown. Here we identify a class of proboscis GRNs requ...
متن کاملNeuroscience prospective on education
As society evolves and makes new demands, how do we educate and nurture creative, free-thinking citizens for our increasingly complex world? Is our educational system truly preparing our youth for the future challenges to civilization , culture, and humanity? If we look at our current educational data, the answer seems to say, " Perhaps not. " So where are we failing? What are the issues we fac...
متن کاملPostmating Circuitry Modulates Salt Taste Processing to Increase Reproductive Output in Drosophila
To optimize survival and reproduction, animals must match their nutrient intake to their current needs. Reproduction profoundly changes nutritional requirements, with many species showing an appetite for sodium during reproductive periods. How this internal state modifies neuronal information processing to ensure homeostasis is not understood. Here, we show that dietary sodium levels positively...
متن کاملFunctional specialization of the male insula during taste perception
The primary gustatory area is located in the insular cortex. Although the insular cortex has been the topic of multiple parcellation studies, its functional specialization regarding taste processing received relatively little attention. Studies investigating the brain response to taste suggested that the insular cortex is involved in processing multiple characteristics of a taste stimulus, such...
متن کاملNeural processing of basic tastes in healthy young and older adults — an fMRI study
Ageing affects taste perception as shown in psychophysical studies, however, underlying structural and functional mechanisms of these changes are still largely unknown. To investigate the neurobiology of age-related differences associated with processing of basic tastes, we measured brain activation (i.e. fMRI-BOLD activity) during tasting of four increasing concentrations of sweet, sour, salty...
